This did not necessarily mean following the lastest fashion. As you say, all respectable Victorian ladies wore corsets, but not all tightlaced to the extremes. A corset did a lot more than create the ladylike shape, it controlled the way she walked, sat, and generally moved. After years of corset wearing most ladies just felt more comfortable in corsets than without. I must say that I can remember years back when I was more comfortable (fit to be seen) in make up and high heels.<br /><br />Today, many women see a bra as a Victorian woman saw her corset.
